John Wright was reared by the poor law system and the church. He was already married to another ,using his birth name so when he married Hannah he used John Wright.
All 3 of their boys used Wright as their birth name.
He stepped out of their lives when they were very young. and married again.
He had a sister who came to live in NZ.
The detail of name confusion; No1 son was bought up by his Grand parents on his Mothers side and took their surname Lamb .No 2 son used Wright, No3 son ( Anthony James ,used Wright until his early 20s and changed to Carr when he came to NZ.
I note from the 1939 register that the Writes lived next door to a Carr, but apparently, the name change to Carr had nothing to do with the neighbours ,but a 'father figure' who featured in his life at sea.
So it would seem that not only was Fredrick Jack Page using two names, he married three times.

Firstly, our person of interest is not to be confused with a similar family based In the vicinity of the East India Docks, in the Parish of All Hallows, Bromley, Middlesex. In the area of Poplar, London. Lots of similarities, but not the same.
Our person of interest the third of four children of Edwin / Edward Page and Florence Gertrude Page, nee Lockwood. Edwin Page had married Florence Lockwood in Q2 1901 at Fulham.

That is just 81 days from the start date to the end date, end date included.
Start and finish before Albert was born.
Poverty struck
Sometime after 1908, according to a newspaper clipping, Edwin Page, a painter, was summoned by his wife, Florence Gertrude Page, living at Harwood Road, Fulham, who sought a separation on the ground of desertion. He had left his family, and joined a circus with another woman. The magistrate granted her a separation, and fixed the allowance to be paid by the husband at 10s. a week.
The desertion led to difficult circumstances for the family, and despite the award of 10 shillings, or half of one pound, if it was paid. They were very poor and three of the children are recorded as going the 'the poor school', West London District School, also known as Ashford School, in Ashford, Middlesex. A residential institution, but not the nearby borstal. Albert, the youngest did not attend.

Alice and Jack were admitted together, with Edwin a month or so later. They were all discharged separately, with Alice, the only girl, being the earliest. The two boys were discharged after appearing in the 1911 Census as residents. Their mother was recorded as living at 113 Harwood Road Fulham, their contact address. Apparently not abandoned, just too poor to feed and look after them.
Subsequentially, Florence remarried, to a George Waters on Jan 1916, in Kensington, London, England.

The Page family lived in a multi-occupancy house at 49 Benledi Street. In the vicinity of the East India Docks, in the Parish of All Hallows, Bromley, Middlesex.
The link to this census page, considering other known information, is somewhat tenuous, but for, sharing the address is a Frederick Duggen, Single, male 19 years of age, recorded as a relative to the head of the house, William Page. Expected would have been Edwin / Edward Page.

The date of the 1911 Census was 2 April 1911, so his age would have been 5 years 1 months 27 days. Recorded as 4 year in the census record. However, ages were often somewhat flexible on Census forms.
Fredrick is recorded as being born in the London Hospital, whilst the rest of the children are Poplar, London, possibly born at home.
The London Hospital officially became The Royal London Hospital on September 24, 1990. This was when Queen Elizabeth II granted the hospital the royal title in recognition of its 250th anniversary. The hospital was originally established as the London Infirmary in 1740. It changed its name to The London Hospital in 1748.
One child, James Page is recorded as having died at the date of the census, at 3 months. By the order of the list, he was presumably born before Alice in 1902 but after the 1901 Census.

The information is reasonably consistent across the 1911 and 1901 Census records. Flora in 1901 and Florence 1911 are assumed to be interchangeable.
This appears to be the same family as previous, still at 73 Willis Street.
Other information suggests that Florence Page died in 1913 and therefore could not be included in the 1921 Census.

WEST LONDON
OFF TO THE "WILD WEST."
Edwin Page, a painter, was summoned by his wife, Florence Gertrude Page, living at Harwood road, Fulham, who sought a separation on the ground of desertion.
Mr. Pierron (Pierron and Ellis) supported the summons, and stated that defendant had treated his wife abominably. He made the acquaintance of a woman named Nora M Naughton in 1908, and she had a travelling circus called the "Wild West Show." She persuaded him and his wife to go round the country with the show, and then in the course of the tour he went off with the woman and betook himself to Canada. In June of this year he was arrested on a warrant issued by the guardians in consequence of the children having been taken to the workhouse, and was sentenced to three months' hard labour. The cost to the ratepayers, added Mr. Pierron, of keeping the children had amounted to £130.
Evidence was given by Mrs. Page, who said that the show was at Chinnor, Bucks, when her husband and the woman M Naughton went off at half-past six one morning.
The defendant said that he did not go off to live with the other woman, and, in fact, she offered both his wife and himself to go to Canada with her.
The magistrate granted her a separation, and fixed the allowance to be paid by the husband at 10s. a week.

The church, St Mary's Boltons, is located south of Old Brompton Road. I assume that the address recorded in the baptism record is not local as it is notated with Notting Hill. Generally, on the rest of the page, there are no such notations.

Finding Weston Terrace, Notting Hill is more problematic. The above 1841 map indicates how small Notting Hill was just 60 years before he was born there. Notting Hill was part of the Parish of Kensington, North of Holland House and Park. The source of that map, TheUndergroundMap.org has a brilliant selection of maps, for different periods.
I have managed to find a Weston Place, but not yet a Weston Terrace. It is possible that Weston Terrace is the name of a block of buildings instead of a road. I searched the Census pages for Weston using FindMyPast I found a Weston Place in Marylebone, but no Weston Terrace.

INTERESTING WEDDING.
CEREMONY AT ST. JOHN'S.
A pretty wedding was solemnised at St. John's Church, Chelsea, on Saturday, the Rev. Carey Ward officiating, when the contracting parties were Miss Alice Blanche Page, only daughter by her first marriage of Mrs. Walters, of 13 Dartrey-road, Chelsea, and Mr. John W. Greenaway, of 32 Worlds End-passage, Chelsea. The bride, who was dressed in white crystalline silk, was given away by her brother, Mr. Edwin Page. The bridesmaids were the Misses Gosling, Miss Annie Butler, and Miss Winnie Fames, and they wore blue and mauve dresses. Mr. Fred Dowding was the best man. After the wedding a reception was held at 13 Dartrey-road. Presents were received from the following:-Bride's Mother and Father, dinner service; bridegroom's Mother and Father, blankets; Mr. Fred Dowding, mats and fire screen; Mr. Page, trinket set; Mr. and Mrs. Eames, hearth rug; Mrs. Drury, picture; Mr. and Mrs. Blee, crockery and glass ware; Mrs. Page and Miss Clements (sisters), quilt: Mr. H. Clements and Miss A. Hunt, tea pot, jug and basin: Mr. and Mrs. Chilton, duchesse set and tea cosy; Mrs. Noyes, glass dishes; Mrs. Slough, fruit dish; Mrs. Butler, Mr. and Mrs. Day, pictures; Mr. and Mrs. Saunders, rose bowl; bride's employers and employees, mirror, chair, and fender; Miss Edie Clements, salt cellars ; and Mr. and Mrs. Scott, coal caldron. Miss Gearing, of Wandsworth Bridge- road, Fulham, supplied the bouquets.

Unfortunately, it looks as if the paper was being removed from the scanner slightly too early, resulting in the blurred effect.
The Marriage record matches the newspaper clipping.
Of note, only daughter of her first marriage.

It is interesting to note that the Baptism Record has a abode of Hanover Street, without annotation that it is a different parish, and that the Hanover Street near Hanover Square is about 3 miles, just over an hour walk, to the church chosen for the baptism of Lily Minnie Carr.

A much more likely Hanover Street. Now known as Noel Road, probably as a result of the exercise to remove duplicate street names. The distance to St Mary's church from hear is only half a mile, a 12 minute walk.

Sometimes, in Census records there is very little information about the individual roads or places. Fortunately, on this occasion both the roads are recorded as well as the house numbers. However, the street names are not written clearly enough to be able to find then on a map by searching. Perhaps City something. Is that City Road, City Garden Row, or something different. Flip pages to find adjacent roads. That sometimes resolves the location. Other times it can be necessary to go to the front of the district census record to the notes and the enumerator's route description. That is exactly what I have done this time.

I have not yet located Tenby Villa. With 48 homes it is likely to be a block of flats / tenements called Tenby Villas, as opposed to a street name.
An 1860 map of the area shows how rural the place was, mainly fields.

This is an approximation of the Enumerators Route for District 37 of the 1891 Census. It is not comprehensive, but it is sufficient to give an idea of the area, and most importantly to confirm the street names within the Census. Including Citizen Road, the address of our family in question.
The map was revised in 1893 to 1894, so is probably quite similar to the layout of the 1891 Census.

The family lived in a multi-occupancy building, as were the neighbouring houses.
Some Ancestry Trees record a marriage to Lillie Minne Carr on 18 Nov 1928 in Fulham, London.
There is a problem here. Albert James Page did indeed marry Lillie Minnie Carr. He was a 39 year old Widower, and she a 44 year old Spinster. That would make their years of birth approximately 1889 and 1884 respectively.
Part of the 1939 Register, for 31 Ravenscourt Road Hammersmith. Page Albert J born either 14 Oct 1889 or 19 10 1889. This matches The marriage record.
Another red herring. An Albert James Page did marry Lily Minnie Carr on 18 Nov 1928 in Fulham, London, but not this Albert James Page.
That Albert James Page was born in the year 1889 and this one 1908. Also, the groom's father is shown as William Page when the expected name would be Edwin or Edward Page.
Accordingly, I have created another Albert James Page, an older person, in my tree, and this one is single again, at twenty years of age.

St Oswald's Road appears to be in St Oswald's parish, not surprisingly, and the associated church may have been the Mission Hall at the end of the road.

The Banns state the bride's parish as being S Oswald's Fulham, however, the Marriage record gives her address as 50 Estcourt Road. An address found elsewhere in her records. It appears that about half of Estcourt Road is within St Oswald's Parish by reference to the sketch of Parishes, and number 50 may be about the middle, having counted the number of buildings on the map. Conclusion, the information matches.
The groom's information is easier, as Tourney Road and St. John's Church are clearly both in the same parish and are on the same clip of map above.

Together with her sister,

Note the date of birth has been transcribed elsewhere as July 15th 1918, but hat is clearly impossible, as the birth would therefore have been after the baptism. Either the month or the year have been mis-interpreted. By reference to other documents, I have concluded that the month is not July but Feby, otherwise Feby or February in full.
1939 Register
The 1939 register, taken in preparation for WWII, and continued to be updated after the war, provides interesting information. The Malcher family is still residing at 50 Estcourt Road, Fulham. Albert and Josephine with four females, at least some of which are married daughters. Another record is officially closed, i.e. living at the time of the release of the information, In the same. building but different household are the Good family. Another Good family lives, as co-occupant, at 48 Estcourt Road.
Peggy has married Page, which we know from above.
Her sister Gladys, baptised at the same time, has married a Lewis. There are two single women, with the surname Franklin, Vera E and Eileen D. The former married a Good, after the register was first compiled. The respective husbands are not currently shown.
I have started to build a Franklin Branch, which links to the Good family, but not necessarily to the same Good family, but have not yet found a link to the Malcher family other than they lived at the same address.
Perhaps the link is to do with dressmaking.

Conundrum resolved.
Compiling the story from various sources.
From the 1921 Census the Franklin family lived at 50 Estcourt Road, Fulham.
The family consisted of Eva Franklin, the head of the family. The wife of an unknown person in respect of the Census, but apparently living abroad.
Together with her children, a son, Charles John Franklin, age 7 years, 11 months, therefore born 1913.
Two daughters, Vera Evelyn Franklin, age 5 years, 5 months, therefore born 1916 and Eileen Dora Franklin, age 2 years, 11 months, therefore born 1918.
From other sources the children's Dates and Places of Births were, Vera; Birth 18 January 1916 • Fulham, Middlesex, England, and Eileen; Birth 25 June 1918 • Crediton, Devon, England.
I don't yet have a Date and Place of Birth for Charles.
It is possible that Charles John Franklin was named after his father. There is a marriage recorded between a Charles John Franklin and Eva Andrews in 1912 at Fulham. This could be the missing father.
The newspaper article states that Vera's mother died some years ago, which could be the case.
There are also records of Eva Franklin, married to Charles John Franklin moving from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1924. Is this just coincidence.
Either way, the children are left without parents, either in the short term, or forever.
In the same house, 50 Estcourt Road, Fulham, another family lived. Perhaps, Flat 1 and Flat 2, or A and B. Either way a multi-occupancy house.
The family was headed by Albert Ernest Malcher, age 34 years, 0 months, therefore born 1887, and his wife Josephine Philippa Malcher, nee Cornelius, age 33 years, 9 months, therefore born 1888.
They married at All Saints' Church, Battle Bridge, King's Cross, Islington, on 15th September 1913.
From the Census 1921, they had two daughters and two visitors. Discounting the visitors, the two daughters, Gladys Josephine Mabel Malcher, age 6 years, 8 months, therefore born 1914 and Peggy Ethel Malcher, age 3 years, 4 months, therefore born 1918.
From other sources the children's Dates and Places of Births were, Gladys; Birth 13 September 1914 • Walham Green, Fulham, Middlesex, England, and Peggy; Birth 15 February 1918 • Walham Green, Fulham, London, England
Between the Census 1921 and the 1939 Register, Albert and Josephine Malcher, had taken in the children from next door, or at least the daughters. They were of a similar age to their own daughters.
From the clip, 'The bride's mother died some years ago. Her father is abroad. Her home since she was a girl has been with Mrs. Josephine Malcher at Estcourt Road.'
The son, Charles John Franklin (b. 1913) may have also been taken in, but is not listed in the 1939 register, unless he is one of the Record is Officially Closed. He would have been about 26 years of age by 1939, so he could well have moved out by then. He did give the bride away.
William George Good joined the army at 18, according to the clip. Born on Sunday 5th September 1915 according to his Baptism record, he would have been 18 on Tuesday, 5 September 1933. He was abroad for the next eight years, up to 1941, if abroad started as soon as he signed up. That is unlikely, so assuming he had some in country service before going abroad, could easily take the eight years to 1944.
Hence, not being found in the 1939 Register with his family.
'Mrs Peggy Page, wife of a prisoner of war, was matron of honour. Also attending the bride was her sister, Eileen.'
Mrs Peggy Page was previously known as Peggy Ethel Malcher who married Albert James Page Albert James Page on 17th April 1938. He lived at 44 Tournay Road, Fulham when they married, and presumably it became the family home, and was still so, when used for the wedding reception.

York Road, now York Way, is a long road, much longer than I have captured on the clip of the map. I don't know where number 96 was but assume it is likely to be near the church, in the same parish, Battle Bridge.
York Road is a long way from Fulham, but I suspect he worked at King's Cross Booking Office, probably on the District Line, and that is how they may have met.

William George Good, aged 6 was living with his parents, George Fredrick, aged 37, and Alice Mary Good, aged 32, of 1 Rowallan Road, Fulham, Middlesex, England. George was a Horse Driver for J H Beatlie & Co, Coal Merchants of Seagrave Road Fulham. He also lived with two siblings, Arthur Edward Good aged 3 years, and Dorthy Mary Good, daughter, aged 11 months.
Rowallan Road is about a 6 minute walk away from Estcourt Road.
In the 1939 Register there were two Good families living adjacent to the Malchet's at 50 Estcourt Road. One of which was George Fredrick Good and his daughter Kathline C Good, born 5th Feb 1910. George was the father of William George Good, the groom in our wedding newspaper clipping. Not a few doors away, but next door, in the same house. William's mother had died on 27th September 1934 at Fulham, London, England, and was therefore not in the 1939 Register, nor at the wedding.

Very interesting to find the newspaper article about William and Vera, as it explained so mach, to be able to put the story together.
However, it did also confirm the the Good and Franklin families at the centre of the story are not part of my tree, well not an attached part.

Left off, with Peggy and Albert being married, and Albert being a prisoner of war.
Peggy was probably living with Vera at 44 Toursnay Road, Fulham, with both husbands away at war.

Whilst Albert James Page is recorded as being a POW during WWII I have yet to find his military record.
What he and his wife did after the war are somewhat vague due to the lack of available records.
They had three children, two daughters and a son.

Peter was born in Epsom and Susan in nearby Carshalton. This would suggest that the family moved from Epsom to Carshalton, not a huge distance, between 1947 and 1954.

According to the Registers of Electors 1969 - 1970 the Bonta family lived at 48 Muschamp Road, Carshalton.
Presumed father and mother, Albert J and Edna M Bonta of Susan E Bonta.
Peter J Harding was also living at the same address. The Y before his name indicates that he is not entitled to vote until after 1st October 1969.
The Representation of the People Act 1969 (c. 15) was an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that lowered the voting age to 18 years. This statute is sometimes called the Sixth Reform Act.
The act extended suffrage to 18-year-olds, the first democratic nation to lower its age of franchise to include this age group. Previously, only those aged over 21 were permitted to vote.
Section 27(1) of the act provided that sections 1, 2 and 3 and so far as relates to qualification of voting at local government elections, section 15, of the act, would come into force as to have effect with respect to the registers of electors for the year 1970.
Section 27(2) of the act provided that section 23 of the act so far as it relates to the age for voting at ward elections or to sections 1 or 3 of the act would come into force as to have effect with respect to the ward lists for the year 1970.
Section 27(3) of the act provided that the act would come into force on a day or days appointed by the home secretary by statutory instrument.
The Representation of the People Act 1969 (Commencement) Order 1969 (SI 1969/630) provided specific commencement dates for acts enactments listed in the schedules to the statutory instrument.
The Representation of the People Act 1969 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1971 (SI 1971/544) provided that section 18(1) of the act would come into force on 1 July 1971.
The Representation of the People Act 1969 (Commencement No. 3) Order 1976 (SI 1976/2064) provided that the rest of the act would come into force on 1 February 1977, namely paragraph 4 of part II of schedule 2 to the act.
On 1st October 1969, given a date of birth of 19th December 1947, Peter J Harding would have been, 21 years, 9 months, 13 days including the end date.
The electoral roll was evidently prepared prior to the change in the voting age, which is both understandable and consistent with the starting dates of the Act.
The entry of a Y on his record is not inconstant with his date of birth of 19th December 1947.
The absence of a Y before Susan's name indicates that she was older than Peter and already eligible to vote.
There is also a Eva M Murdoch living at number 48. Currently I have presumed that this is Edna's mother.
It would therefore be reasonable to assume that Susan's mothers maiden name would be Murdoch.

However, this gives rise to a problem.
There is no annotation on the Register of Electors for Bonta, Susan E. suggesting no restrictions due to age. Stated date of eligibility is 10th October 1968, hence 21 years of age before that date, for date of birth, i.e.. 11th October 1947.

This entry resolves the previous Bonta or Bunta as Bonta. Both proceeding and succeeding entries are Bo.
The marriage occurred in the 4th Quarter 1968 so could easily be after the Qualifying date of 10th October 1968.

The record comes up as Ancestry hints in both Peter's and Susan's profiles.
I have yet to find records of travel or emigration to USA.
Some Ancestry Trees have Peter J Harding as marrying a person called Parsons in 1990 in Australia.
I have yet to find evidence.

Ashford School
Ashford School - West London District School
Ashford School for the poor and needy.

The West London School District was formed in 1868 and covered the London Unions of Fulham, Hammersmith, Paddington, St. George, Hanover Square (1868-1870), and City of Westminster (from 1913).
The School District Board first met on 2nd April 1868, and on 9th October that year accepted the plans of HH Colins for a school for 800 children. The school was built in 1869-72 at the west side of District Road, now Woodthorpe Road, at Ashford near Staines.

Ashford, Middlesex, was indeed blessed by the investment of infrastructure at the behest of it's near neighbour, London.
Not only a residential Poor School, but barely two miles away, a borstal. One each side of the tiny village.

Sadly, Rose Mary Page had four separate visits, perhaps more, beyond my page turning review, to Ashford School. I don't think that she is part of the family we are looking at, but perhaps a more distant relative. From the records I have found to date, Rose Mary was 7 years 6 months when she first arrived at Ashford School and 14 years 6 months at the end of the fourth visit.
Alice Page was aged 4 years 11 months on admission and 5 years 9 months on discharge, a duration of 288 days,
Jade Page was aged 3 years 1 month on admission and 5 years 8 months on discharge, a duration of 966 days,
Edwin Page was aged 7 years 2 months on admission and 10 years 10 months on discharge, a duration of 1317 days,
Whilst Alice and Jade were admitted on the same day, Edwin was 42 days later.
It seems strange that they were all discharged on different dates. Jade discharged 1 years 10 months after Alice, and Edwin about a month later.
Initially I had read this as Jade, but magnifying to this extent reveals that it could be Jack. Jack would mesh better with the statement in Alice Blanche Page wedding newspaper clipping regarding 'only daughter of her first marriage'. Jack, in this age, is probably a boy, born 6th February 1906. This entry could therefore be Frederick Jack Page.
