Memory Map Adventurer 2800 GPS

Memory Map Adventurer 2800 GPS

I bought the Memory Map Adventurer 2800 GPS at an exhibition, perhaps camping and caravanning, or some other outdoor activities show.

A review from Bike Radar.

A YouTube video from Memory Map.

I already had MemoryMap installed on my PC, both version 4 and version 5. This was a logical extension. It was to partially replace a Garmin Geko 201/301.

Not only did it have maps to follow but it recorded where you were and were you had been using GPS.

I had already used the Garmin Geko to great effect on a holiday in Wales, where the cottage we stayed in was well off the beaten track. Going for walks and being able to find your way back because of a track is very useful.

The position logs, or tracks recorded on the Memory Map Adventurer 2800 GPS could be imported into the PC Memory Map software, and as if by magic, there is the timings and the route taken. I not think I had a car Satnav at the time and I did not use the Memory Map Adventurer 2800 GPS as a substitute. They are different things for different purposes.

I think I already had a i-gotU GT-120 USB GPS Travel Logger. Again a very different product.

i-gotU Travel Logger

The i-gotU Travel Logger is a small simple looking devise.

A 2009 review of a i-gotU travel logger. It looks the same but I don't know if the model number is the same.

I have a number of GPS data logs, commonly called tracks, from a number of GPS devices.

These can be viewed in on computer programs such as Google Earth Pro, Garmin BaseCamp, and Memory Map. Although, for the latter the acceptable file format appears to be GPX.

A case in point, our Bay of Biscay Whale Watching Trip.

According to a review of the I-gotU

The ' i-gotU GT-120, a GPS logger and receiver which records trip routes, auto add photo GPS locations and create an animated trip journal based on the data logged.'

The output was a large dataset of 2790 points.

Measure   Data
Start date and time   20/09/2010  11:22
End date and time   20/09/2010  18:59
Duration   7 hrs  13 mins  32 secs
Recording interval   10 secs
Points recorded   2790

Distance travelled   238 km

Speed
Minimum   26.0 km/h
Average   32.9 km/h
Maximum   37.9 km/h

For each point, the following are also recorded
Time
Elevation
Position - Latitude and Longitude
Leg (between points) distance, time, and speed
The line also has total assent and decent, which is not really relevant here. Sum of all the waves!

Over 22,000 pieces of information. A rich dataset.

A dataset that I want to import into an alternative visual aid as the original is no longer trading.

The above is an extract from another article I have written about Google Earth Projects.

Lets look at what else could be none, especially before the loss of a-trip.

An additional function of i-gotU was that if you press the big button on the front of the devise, it records the data at that moment. Excellent for working in conjunction with digital cameras.

Once the track was uploaded to a-trip a visualization of the line could be seen on a map. Then upload some photos with digital exif data including times. Note, both the i-gotU and camera have to have the same clock time. Both adjusted for the same place and therefore time in the world.

The photos are then distributed along that line based on the time the photo was taken and the nearest track point. It was not a requirement to press the button as described above to do this, as for this track the interval was 10 seconds, which equates to a reasonable accuracy of position. The photos are now geotagged ready for use in other programs.

If I recall correctly, not only were the associated photos displayed together with the line, on the map, but you could run a timeline slideshow.

Family trips and holidays as a teenager

In no specific order, here are a few photos of family day trips and holidays whilst I was a youngster, in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. We never travelled abroad as I was growing up. My parents did go to Italy together after I had left home. Their only venture overseas together.

Background

Hello, and welcome.

My name is Ivan Hurst and this travelogue is a collection of stories, photos, videos, and facts about my overland travels. It also includes holidays and short breaks. The stories start in the early 1970's, with occasional reminisces even further back in time. The initial year of writing this page is 2012, with updates in 2016, and intermittently thereafter, so there is generally a considerable gap between the event and writing it up.

Encounter Overland Ltd

Encounter Overland’s workshop was located in rural Bedfordshire. The address was Wren Park Hitchin Road Shefford Bedfordshire SG17 5JD. Between trips this is where the trucks were stored, repaired and prepared for the next trip. There was a small permanent staff, headed up by Bill Wallace, managing the workshop and the rest of the workforce was made up of drivers between trips. Whilst looking for Encounter Overland’s Shefford address I found info on Working for an Adventure Travel Company. It states;-

  • What Will the Work Entail?
    • Long hours.
    • Mechanical knowledge required.
    • Low pay but travel formalities are taken care of.
    • Essential to get on with people in claustrophobic conditions.
    • Stamina and endurance a must.

Not a lot has changed since ‘79 then.

Repairs following hosting move

Spending some time this May repairing links and photos damaged in the move to the new website host. Particularly the articles transferred form the previous travelogue to this, the current Travel website.

Change of host Sept 2023

Change of host Sept 2023

In the begining of August 2023 I transfered my ivanhurst.me.uk sites, including this one from 123-reg to IONOS. It was meant to be a simple task. However, that was to to be the case. The reason for the move was primarily the hugh increase in price that 123-reg was applying regarding email boxes. Previously, the upto 500 of the boxes were included in the various hosting packages I had. Now they were going to charge for each mailbox based on size, and as far as I could make out, this was going to cost me nearly £2,000. This was not acceptable, and I did not get satisfactory answers from support. So I turned off all the auto renews and stated to move sites and domains accross to IONOS.

Travel data problems

Travel data problems

This is where it starts to get a little technical.

The site is built on a content management system, CMS, using Joomla. Joomla is moving forward and version 3.10.?? is being discontinued. Future developments are for version 4.??

Similarly, PHP 7 is being replaced with PHP 8.

Part of the migration is relatively simple, I have already changed to a new template which works on the new platforms.

However, some of the helper applications, which work within Joomla are not yet ready.

Fabrik is one of those applications, if fact a significant 'Joomla Custom Website Application Builder'.

Refresh 2021

Site refresh Easter 2021

I decided to give the site a bit of a refresh over Easter 2021 and install a new template and some additional functions. One of the things I didn't like about the old site was the delay in text appearing which probably meant some people left before the content appeared. This has been disabled now.
